Newfie Books

I have all the following books and have found them to be a great resource - + love to look at the pictures!

Care & Training Books

The Newfoundland Puppy: Early Care, Early Training by Judi Adler. If you want only one book, this is the one you should get! It goes well beyond "early training", covering conformation, grooming, veterinary care, water training, carting & sledding, tracking, backpacking, agility, even over 100 ideas of what to do when you and your Newfie are bored. Lots of black and white photos. Excellent. 172 p. 2001

Newfoundland by Angela Barlowe. This is a fairly recent book in the Kennel Club series. It has numerous helpful color photos and covers history, characteristics, breed standard, your puppy, everyday care, training, health care and your senior. 155 p. Hardcover. 2004

Newfoundlands Today by Hedd & Del Richards. If you are interested in showing and learning about the leading Newfoundland kennels, this is a great book with many photos (most in color) of specific Newfoundlands. Also chapters on taking on a puppy, grooming, water work, draught work, breeding and health. 200 p. Hardcover. 2003

The Newfoundland by Emmy Bruno. Interesting perspective from an Italian breeder. Covers history, standards of various countries, movement, character, breeding & training. Many black & white photos. 180 p. Hardcover. 1997

Newfoundlands by Kitty Drury & Bill Linn. Only the first 64 pages of this TFH Publications book deal specifically with the Newfoundland (description, standard, grooming, backpacking, selecting, new family member, and feeding requirements); the rest of the book is generic and covers accommodations, housebreaking & training, behavior, health care, dental care, breeding and the law. The first section has some nice color photos of Newfies. 192 p. 1997

Newfoundlands by Joanna Kosloff. This book is one of Barron's "Complete Pet Owner's Manuals".  Nice color photos. Chapters cover origins and history of the breed, considerations before you buy, living with your Newfie, training, feeding, grooming, showing, breeding & health care. 96 p. 1996

The Newfoundland Gentle Giant by Jo Ann Riley. This book is more comprehensive than the previous two but has black and white photos only (a lot of nice ones though). It covers the advantages and disadvantages of the breed, history, standard, choosing your Newfie, care & training of the puppy and adult dog, grooming, activities, competitions, Newfoundland Club of America, Newfies beyond our borders, breeding & whelping, and your older Newfoundland. Champion dogs in the US and elsewhere are identified in several photos. 122 p. 2004

Guide to Owning a Newfoundland by Sarah Storey. This is another TFH Publication which is very succinct and basic. It does cover the history, characteristics and standard of the breed, your Newfoundland puppy, feeding, grooming, training, showing and health. Some very nice color photos but otherwise quite basic. 64 p.
