Penelope

Tarbearys Whirlwind Penelope

Penelope is a great example of the wonderful Newfoundland temperament: laid back, friendly with everyone, especially children, other dogs, cats - and she would love to make friends with squirrels and rabbits if only she could get (very) close to them.

The first two photos on the left are of Penelope. She generally weighs between 100 and 110 lbs. You can see more of her below and  here. And some pictures of her swimming here.

Her Name

Whirlwind? Penelope is far from being a whirlwind but the week after we had her, our town was struck by Hurricane Isabel, my husband Tim had to have an emergency appendectomy and I was without power for 9 days. Penelope was incredible during all this time and had only one accident in the house. Nevertheless "Whirlwind" seemed appropriate as part of her name to remind us of those times.

I chose Penelope as her call name because I own a wholesale business selling spinning wheels and looms. According to the Greek myth, Penelope, Ulysses's wife, was a weaver.  Her husband was believed to have died on his way back from Troy to his island of Ithaca so Queen Penelope was urged to re-marry. Ever faithful, Penelope tricked her pretendants by agreeing to marry one of them once her woven tapestry was finished. She would actively weave by day only to undo her work at night. After a very long trip and multiple adventures (read Homer's "The Odyssey"), Ulysses finally made it back home.

Our Penelope comes to work with me every day.  She weaves her way in between the looms and spinning wheels and loves to greet people, especially children. You can see her pedigree here and her OFA health clearances here.
